Mohali cardiac surgeon to present case papers in US
Dr. Harinder Singh Bedi, a senior cardiovascular endovascular & a thoracic surgeon at Ivy Hospital, Mohali has been invited to the prestigious 34th American Vein and Lymphatic Society (AVLS) in Washington.
Through a virtual conference, Dr. Bedi will present the procedure case of a middle-aged woman, who was suffering from a massive proximal deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and a massive pulmonary embolism (PE). It was a potentially rapidly fatal condition. She was treated successfully at Ivy recently.
The 4-day AVLS is a very elite conference, where over 1000 experts will discuss difficult cases and the results of the latest trials and new therapies from October 15. There will be a large international audience of experts from 25 countries across continents.
Dr. Bedi said that a large PE can suddenly block the outflow of the heart leading to a cardiac arrest. The treatment till some years back was a high-risk open-heart surgery. Now catheter-directed therapies are successful and the first line of therapy in massive PE, he remarked
As the third most common cause of cardiovascular death, PE affects 900,000 people in the US thus 1 to 2 in 1000. It causes 60,000 to 100,000 deaths per year in the US, Dr. Bedi informed.
